Sixteen amazing acts from Oregon and Washington performed, each giving their all to win the title of either 2011-12 WCS NW Chapter ?Best Song? or ?Best Performer.?

After almost 30 minutes of intense debates, judges Peter Vaughn Shaver, Vicki Ambinder, and Tony Ferguson finally decided on the winners.

Worth won ?Best Song? for ?Let?s Make It Last,? while John Rankin won ?Best Performance? to a standing-room-only crowd.

The annual Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting brings a wealth of scientific minds to the shores of Germany?s Lake Constance. Every summer at Lindau, dozens of Nobel Prize winners exchange ideas with hundreds of young researchers from around the world. Whereas the Nobelists are the marquee names, the younger contingent is an accomplished group in its own right. In advance of this year?s meeting, which focuses on physics, we are profiling several promising attendees under the age of 30. The profile below is the first in a series of 30.

What is your field of research?
I investigate different aspects of nonperturbative quantum chromodynamics, from the mechanism of confinement in vacuum to the different phases of matter under extreme conditions of temperature and density, as found in the early universe, ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions and ultra-compact stars.

What drew you to physics, and to that research area in particular?
What brought me to physics in the first place was the desire of continuously learning new things and in some sense my choice of research area also reflects this, since the study of nonperturbative quantum chromodynamics media is a very interdisciplinary topic, requiring usage of tools from statistical mechanics and quantum field theory combined with phenomenological knowledge of particle and nuclear physics as well as analogous condensed matter systems.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
In 10 years, I see myself as a university professor in Brazil always keeping my desire of investigating new topics at the edge of scientific knowledge as well as re-learning from a different perspective basic and classical results while teaching and guiding students.

Who are your scientific heroes?
I do not have specific heroes, but whoever made me (or allowed me to) admire the beauty and complexity of yet another aspect of nature felt like a hero for me at that moment.

What activities outside of physics do you most enjoy?
A hobby that has been mostly present in my life since early years and that I value a lot is classical ballet. This is an activity that exercises mind and body in a different way and helps me to reset my thoughts when I need it the most.

What do you hope to gain from this year?s Lindau meeting?
The Lindau Meeting is a unique opportunity to acquire a rich picture of nature as viewed by the elite of physics. More important than to accumulate specific knowledge, the close contact with the vision of Nobel winners of their fields is extremely inspiring for a young researcher, like me, who is starting to build their own approach to scientific questions. Also, the diversity of areas enhances the experience of contrasting different views, identifying alignments and experiencing the complementarity of various successful scientific approaches. I hope to leave Lindau inspired by the examples and vision of Nobelists, carrying a broad and rich picture of physics and how it should be pursued.

Are there any Nobelists whom you are particularly excited to meet or learn from at Lindau?
Even though it will be extremely interesting to have contact with Nobel winners from my field of research, like [Martinus J. G.] Veltman and [David] Gross, I am particularly interested in comparing visions of Nobel winners from very different domains and approaches, theorists and experimentalists.

Republicans look south for help in tough North Carolina race

ASHEVILLE, North Carolina (Reuters) - The stakes are so high in North Carolina for the November 6 presidential election that Republicans have called in the cavalry - party supporters from South Carolina.

They are determined not to repeat mistakes of 2008, when North Carolina Republicans got caught flatfooted by well-organized Democrats who helped Barack Obama beat John McCain in the state by just 14,177 votes.

The party's aggressive grassroots effort includes a deal with South Carolina - a reliably Republican state - to send 1,000 volunteers to its northern neighbor to help get out the vote. Volunteers who stay in South Carolina will also make thousands of phone calls to North Carolina voters before Election Day.

"It's a natural fit between North and South Carolina because we work so closely together," state Republican chairman Robin Hayes said in an interview, adding there were lots of Republicans in South Carolina who wanted to help.

"It demonstrates how much enthusiasm there is," he said.

Republicans would love to embarrass the Democrats, who awarded their national convention to Charlotte, North Carolina, in part as incentive for a repeat of 2008, when the Democrats won the state for the first time in a quarter century.

Obama's campaign manager, Jim Messina, said in a Web video message this week that the campaign knew swing states like North Carolina would be tough but he was confident that grassroots organizing would boost the president to victory in November.

"While polls say it is 'too close to call' in North Carolina what matters to me is this: We've already registered 83,000 voters this cycle in North Carolina," Messina said. "Organizing on the ground, talking to voters ... That's how you win."

MOMENTUM FOR REPUBLICANS?

Hayes and top Republicans know they will be hard-pressed to match Obama's well-oiled grassroots machine in the state, where some volunteers have been working since the 2008 election.

Though opinion polls show the race is still up for grabs, Republicans feel momentum is on their side after taking control of the state legislature in 2010 and after winning passage of an amendment banning gay marriage earlier this year.

They also hope to capitalize on North Carolinians' widespread dissatisfaction with Democratic Governor Bev Perdue and a sexual harassment scandal in the state's Democratic Party.

Republicans are venturing out farther and much earlier than in 2008, opening up four "Victory Centers" of phone banks so far including the newest one in Asheville, an arts hub in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Political experts say Republicans learned from 2008 and realized they needed to set up shop even in more areas like Asheville if they want to win the state this year. While Asheville, known for its organic food and emphasis on green living, is mainly Democratic, the surrounding counties are much more conservative.

Pollster Tom Jensen of Public Policy Polling said help from South Carolina field workers and recruiting Republicans around Asheville showed the party was on the offensive.

"It really is a state where every little thing can make a difference," said Jensen. "This really has the potential for being the closest state in the country."

Jensen said PPP had conducted 19 polls so far pitting Obama against presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney. Eighteen of 19 times the two were within 3 percentage points of each other.

At the launch of the new Victory Center, tucked into a strip mall alongside a gym and near a military recruiting office, veteran Republican volunteer Carroll Wray welcomed help from South Carolina.

Wray, from Horse Shoe, in a conservative rural district about 25 miles south of Asheville, said he would work hard to round up volunteers to staff phone banks to make sure Obama does not get re-elected.

"For the most part, people want Obama moved on," said Wray. "There's mistrust - they are uncomfortable with his long-term plans and his not fulfilling what he promised."

Hayes, the party chairman, was not so outwardly optimistic. But he said frustration with the sagging economy and a lack of jobs will help Republicans.

"Burn these phones up," he told volunteers, standing in the middle of a bank of 14 telephones as the Asheville center was opened. "Get those phones going, get those doors knocked on. Be out there - not as talkers, not as preachers but as folks who are listening to people who disgusted, dismayed, upset."

YOUNG PEOPLE KEY FOR DEMOCRATS

Democratic operatives admit they face an uphill battle to win the state, but are confident they can keep interest alive among young people who voted in record numbers in 2008 and who were key to Obama's success in the state.

"I really don't think that youth engagement is going to be an issue in this election," said Tori Taylor, a recent graduate of University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a former leader of the state's College Democrats.

Taylor, an Obama volunteer who focuses mainly on young people, said she did not sense much interest in Romney among independent or unaffiliated student voters.

"Mitt Romney's not the candidate for us but President Obama has proven he cares about young people ... he has a track record of passing legislation and coming out in support of things that are important to us and our generation," said Taylor.

Steven Greene, a political scientist at North Carolina State, said a Democratic victory this year would likely be even narrower than in 2008, when Obama won the state by less than 1 percent.

In the end, Greene said, it was a question of turnout.

"The big question for me is the youth turnout and the youth enthusiasm. A certain number of them have been disillusioned," Greene said. "But Obama remains much more popular among young people than his Republican counterparts."

Cheryl Carter-Ellis, a 50-year-old mother of three and volunteer for Obama since 2007, said enthusiasm among Democrats was beginning to build in the run-up to the election.

She said she had expected voters to be hesitant about Obama in the difficult economy.

"It kind of shocked me, I was expecting to see some of that frustration," said Carter-Ellis. "But people seem to understand that in the job of president you have to make sure that everyone gets a fair shot and that's what this president has done."

Greene predicted that Obama would likely hold on to the strong support of African American voters he had in 2008. Some political experts had predicted that Obama's decision to support gay marriage - announced the day after North Carolina voted to ban it - could hurt him among black voters in the state.

North Carolina voters rejected same sex marriage last month, approving an amendment to ban it by a 3-to-2 margin.

But a recent PPP survey showed that African Americans in the state were shifting their views on same sex marriage in the wake of Obama's announcement, though a majority still opposed it.

Matt Towery, publisher of the Southern Political Report, said Obama's move to support gay marriage was calculated to "rev up" liberal white voters in North Carolina to get them to vote in November.

"If you can get people upset, you might be able to increase the vote," Towery said.

Hundreds evacuated as Colorado, New Mexico fires spread

LAPORTE, Colo. (AP) ? Firefighters on Sunday were fighting wildfires that have spread quickly in parched forests in Colorado and New Mexico, forcing hundreds of people from their homes and the evacuation of wolves from a sanctuary.

The Colorado fire, burning in a mountainous area about 15 miles west of Fort Collins, grew to 22 square miles within about a day of being reported and has destroyed or damaged 18 structures.

Strong winds, meanwhile, grounded aircraft fighting a 40-square-mile wildfire near the mountain community of Ruidoso in southern New Mexico. Crews were working to build a fire line around the blaze, which started Friday and has damaged or destroyed 36 structures.

It wasn't immediately clear how many of the structures lost were homes. "We're still trying to take a tally," Kerry Gladden, public information officer for Ruidoso, said late Sunday afternoon.

In Colorado, the fire sent up heavy smoke, obscuring the sun and creating an eerie, orange dusk in the middle of the day. The smell of smoke drifted into the Denver area and smoke spread as far away as central Nebraska, western Kansas and Texas.

The latest New Mexico fire is smaller than the Whitewater-Baldy fire ? the largest in the state's history ? but it's more concerning to authorities because it started closer to homes, said Dan Ware, a spokesman for the New Mexico State Forestry Division. He said the number of Ruidoso evacuees was in the hundreds, but he didn't have an exact figure.

Gladden said preliminary evacuations could be issued for some areas closer to town due to wind shifts.

Karen Takai, a spokeswoman for the Ruidoso fire crews, said smoke is heavily impacting the community of Capitan, about 5 miles to the northeast. She said Capitan and others could also face evacuation.

"Any communities around this fire have the potential of being evacuated," she said. "If I lived in Capitan, I definitely would be prepared. Don't wait until the sheriff's office comes knocking at your door and tells you to evacuate."

Elsewhere Sunday, firefighters were battling a wildfire that blackened 6 square miles in Wyoming's Guernsey State Park and forced the evacuation of between 500 and 1,000 campers and visitors. Cooler weather was helping firefighters in their battle against two other wildfires in southern Utah.

In Colorado, authorities sent nearly 1,800 evacuation notices to phone numbers but it wasn't clear how many residents had to leave. About 500 people had checked in at Red Cross shelters. Larimer County Sheriff Justin Smith said there was an unconfirmed report of a person unaccounted for, but he wouldn't elaborate.

Authorities say it's the worst fire seen in Larimer County in about 25 years. It spread as fast as 1 1/2 miles an hour Saturday, skipping over some areas but burning intensely in trees in others. Flames were coming dangerously close to deputies who were telling some residents to evacuate, Smith said.

Kathie Walter and her husband helped friends several miles away evacuate from the Colorado fire on Saturday. When they got home, they were surprised to get a call warning them to be ready to evacuate just in case. But Walter didn't want to wait.

"Smoke was coming in hard. We could not see flames or orange or black smoke. But we didn't need to see anymore. We just said 'Hey, let's get out of here,'" she said.

They evacuated with their five cats and two dogs. They had a head start. After a wildfire in the area last year, they had left two suitcases packed in their garage.

Elaine Mantle and her family got a call to evacuate their Bellvue home at 5:45 a.m. Sunday. It took about 30 minutes for them to get out and reach a spillover shelter at the Budweiser Event Center in Loveland. Evacuees gathered there for a fire briefing, sipping coffee and eating bananas and powdered doughnuts, in a large gymnasium-like space.

It was the Mantles' first evacuation in the 25 years that they have lived in the mountains, and they were grateful to be safe.

"We're all here, we're all OK. Our neighbors are all here. We feel good," Mantle said.

The blaze also forced the evacuation of 11 wolves from a sanctuary near the fire. KUSA-TV in Denver reported that 19 wolves remained behind at the sanctuary, which has underground concrete bunkers known as "fire dens" that can be used by the animals.

The fire is the latest to hit Colorado's drought-stricken Front Range. In May, a fire set by a camper's stove charred 12 square miles in the same Poudre Canyon area. In March, a fire sparked by a prescribed burn 25 miles southwest of Denver killed three people and damaged or destroyed more than two dozen homes.

Eight air tankers ? including two from Canada ? and several helicopters were on the scene to help fight the blaze.

Authorities say they're competing for resources that have been diluted by several wildfires burning across the West.

"Resources are thin right now," said Nick Christensen of the Larimer County Sheriff's Office. "We are trying to get more of everything at this point."

Meanwhile, the speed at which the fire has spread has dashed any hopes of containment for the time being.

"These folks are doing everything they can, but Mother Nature is running this fire," Smith, the sheriff, said.

In New Mexico, the mix of timber, dry grass and the steepness of the slopes were making the firefighting efforts more difficult.

The fire was burning in steep, rocky, inaccessible terrain in the White Mountain Wilderness of the Lincoln National Forest, which is home to Smokey Bear, who became the nation's symbol of fire prevention in the 1940s.

More than 300 firefighters were battling the blaze with help from three large air tankers, three heavy helicopters and three Blackhawk helicopters. There were also 100 National Guard troops in Ruidoso.

As a rule, these destinations host multiple conferences and events during the year, which makes it possible for them to refuse to negotiate room prices, since they know they will have plenty of business. Syrian troops bomb rebel-held neighborhood in Homs

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian troops on Friday shelled a rebel-held neighborhood in the flashpoint central city of Homs as President Bashar Assad's troops appeared to be readying to storm the area that has been out of government control for months, activists said.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees had no immediate word on casualties from the shelling of Hom's Khaldiyeh neighborhood. Amateur videos posted online showed a small white plane, apparently a drone, flying over Homs.

Homs has been one of the hardest hit regions in Syria since the uprising against Assad's regime began in March last year. The U.N. said several weeks ago that more than 9,000 people have been killed since the crisis began while activists put the number of dead at about 13,000.

Friday's violence came two days after reports of mass killing in the nearby province of Hama where about 80 people, including women and children, were shot or stabbed. U.N. observers came under fire Thursday as they tried to reach the site in Mazraat al-Qubair, a small farming community of 160 people, mostly Bedouins.

In Geneva, International Committee of the Red Cross spokesman Hicham Hassan told reporters Friday that the humanitarian situation in Syria was worsening.

"Currently the situation is extremely tense, not only in Houla, not only in Hama, but in many, many places around the country," he said referring to the string of villages known as Houla, where more than 100 people were massacred last month. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told the Security Council, according to a senior U.N. official. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity because Thursday's council meeting was private, said Ban also reported repeated incidents of firing close to U.N. patrols, apparently to get them to withdraw.

International envoy Kofi Annan, whose peace plan brokered in April has not been implemented, warned against allowing "mass killings to become part of everyday reality in Syria."

"If things do not change, the future is likely to be one of brutal repression, massacres, sectarian violence, and even all-out civil war," Annan told the U.N. General Assembly in New York. "All Syrians will lose."

U.N. diplomats said Annan was proposing that world powers and key regional players, including Iran, come up with a new strategy to end the 15-month conflict at a closed meeting of the Security Council that took place Thursday.
